Puerto del Rosario is the capital city of the island located on the east (along north) coast of the island of Fuerteventura. The Juan Bordes promenade of Puerto del Rosario is a nice place and decorated with gigantic shells and is dotted with the head offices of the principal institutions of the island. Puerto del Rosario is the main gateway to Fuerteventura and is an important commercial centre with a seaport. The Matorral Airport is also located in this district.




This old fishing town became the capital city at rather a late stage, at the end of the 19th century. Holidaymakers may see some of the features on the streets of which the islanders are particularly proud, such as the reminder of Miguel de Unamuno’s stay in the 1930s.

Tefia is the site of the eco-museum in Puerto del Rosario that is a rural compound consisting of seven homes restored to their original design, where the visitors may learn of how life was in the olden days and also savour traditional dishes.

Puerto del Rosario holds its festivities in honour of the Virgin of the Rosary in early October.
