Travelling to Fuerteventura, Canary Islands - How to Get There?


Fuerteventura, a member of the Canary Islands, is the second largest of the Canary Islands and lies about 100 km. (60 miles) off the coast of Saharan Africa and on the south of Lanzarote. The island may be reached by sea and by air and it is one of the best communicated in the Canary Islands. Most of the flights from Fuerteventura are made to Europe and about 3/4 of the flights are made to United Kingdom and Germany. Domestic flights are mostly made to Gran Canaria, Madrid - Barajas and Tenerife Norte as well as with the other Spanish destinations such as Bilbao, Santiago de Compostela and Seville.

There are many direct flights to Fuerteventura from many major cities of Europe and the world.

Flying to the other islands of the Canary Islands and then getting to Fuerteventura by ferries is another option for getting to the island.

The International Airport in Fuerteventura is the Fuerteventura Airport - FUE (Tel: +34 91 321 10 00; 902 404 704; www.aena.es) and it is located in El Matorral, 5 km. from the island capital of Puerto del Rosario, 10 mins from Caleta de Fuste and 30 mins from Corralejo.

As for the bus routes; Route-3 operates through Puerto del Rosario (Avenida de la Constitución)-Hospital- Airport (in front of the terminal )-El Matorral-Caleta de Fuste (Castillo), Las Salinas; Route 10 operates through Puerto del Rosario (Avenida de la Constitución)-Airport (in front of the terminal)-Caleta de Fuste-Gran Tarajal-La Lajita-Costa Calma-Morro Jable.

Car hire is also another option for getting around the island. Many of those car hire agencies have offices at the airport offering cheap car hire in Fuerteventura.

by Sea (Ferries) from Spain
It is possible to get to Fuerteventura by sea from the city of Cadiz in Spain. Trasmediterranea (www.trasmediterranea.es; Phone: 902 454 645) is the ferry company for travelling via Cadiz. There are regular ferries once a week from Cadiz to  Arrecife, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and La Palma. Fuerteventura has three main ports in the resorts of Puerto del Rosario, Corralejo and Morro Jable.

There are also regular ferries between the other islands of the Canaries.
